Propel Sinus Implant in New Braunfels, TX

Propel Sinus Implant in New Braunfels, TX

Chronic sinusitis is a common condition that affects an estimated 28.9 million adults in the US each year. It is characterized by the irritation, swelling, or inflammation of the tissues lining the sinus passages. This inflammation can cause a blockage in the nasal passages. This may lead to common symptoms like nasal congestion, breathing difficulties, sinus pain and pressure, headache, fatigue, and a reduced sense of smell or taste.

While medications may help manage mild sinusitis, more persistent or chronic cases may require a different approach–such as the consideration of the Propel sinus implant, depending on individual evaluations.

What Is Propel Sinus Implant?

The Propel sinus implant is an alternative treatment for some cases of chronic sinusitis in appropriate patients. It targets the inflamed and swollen sinuses directly and is designed to help open blocked sinus cavities, which may improve mucus drainage and reduce symptoms in some patients.

Propel was FDA-approved in 2013 and has been shown to be safe and effective in clinical studies for appropriate candidates. Clinical studies have shown that the Propel implant may carry fewer risks of post-surgical inflammation or scarring in some patients. However, individual outcomes can vary, and follow-up procedures may still be necessary in some cases.

How it works:

Propel is an FDA-approved drug-eluting sinus implant that gradually releases mometasone furoate, an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid that may be considered for patients with chronic sinusitis who have not responded well to standard treatments, depending on clinical evaluation.

The Propel implant is inserted during an endoscopic sinus surgery. The implant itself resembles a spring and delivers a measured dose of the medication directly at the sinus site. It is completely absorbed by the body in four to six weeks after implantation and gradually dissolves.
