Septoplasty Surgery in New Braunfels, TX

Septoplasty Surgery in New Braunfels, TX

A Surgical Option for Persistent Nasal Obstruction

Persistent nasal congestion can interfere with daily productivity, sleep, and comfort. One common, yet often overlooked cause is a deviated septum.

Here at New Braunfels Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Centers, our team offers comprehensive nasal evaluations to determine if a deviated septum is present and whether septoplasty may be an appropriate treatment option based on clinical findings, the severity of the symptoms, and your nasal anatomy.

What Is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is an outpatient procedure designed to correct a deviated septum, an anatomical variation where the nasal septum (the wall of bone and cartilage between the nostrils) is off-center and misaligned. This can obstruct nasal airflow and contribute to chronic nasal obstruction and breathing difficulties.

During the procedure, your ENT surgeon repositions the misaligned nasal septum with the goal of improving nasal airflow and breathing in select patients. Results vary per individual, and not all symptoms fully resolve after recovery. A consultation with your doctor can help determine if this is the appropriate procedure for your condition.

When to Consider Septoplasty

It’s important to remember that not all patients with a deviated septum will require septoplasty. Your care provider may recommend it if you experience:

  • Persistent nasal congestion that doesn’t respond to standard medications
  • Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Persistent postnasal drip
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Sleep disturbances, such as snoring, that may, in some cases, be linked to structural nasal issues

These symptoms can have multiple causes, and not all cases will benefit from septoplasty. Your ENT care provider can help evaluate your condition and determine the most appropriate treatment.

What Are the Potential Risks and Complications?

Septoplasty is generally considered a safe procedure. However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks, which may include:

  • Temporary swelling or discomfort in the surgical site
  • Bleeding or infection
  • Persistent nasal obstruction
  • Changes in the shape of the nose
  • Need for revision surgery (a typically rare instance)

During your consultation, your care provider will walk you through all potential benefits and risks to support an informed health decision.

Recovery After Septoplasty

Septoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to return home the same day. During your consultation before the procedure, your care provider will thoroughly explain to you the healing and recovery process you can expect. Typically, it may involve:

  • Avoiding strenuous physical activities for a while, as advised
  • Follow-up appointments to monitor post-procedure healing and recovery
  • Using nasal packing as needed
  • Pain medication
