Deviated Septum Treatment in New Braunfels, TX

Deviated Septum Treatment in New Braunfels, TX

Individualized Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

Here at New Braunfels Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Centers, our team has clinical experience evaluating and treating structural nasal conditions such as a deviated septum—a common yet often overlooked condition that can impact breathing, comfort, and overall sinus health.

If you’re experiencing persistent nasal congestion and breathing problems, a deviated septum is one of several underlying causes. Our team offers a comprehensive ENT evaluation to determine the cause of your issues and help develop individualized care plans tailored to your nasal anatomy and symptoms.

What Is a Deviated Septum?

The nasal septum is the thin wall of bone and cartilage that separates the nasal cavity into right and left nostrils. The nasal septum, located in the middle of the nose, can sometimes be off-center and misaligned, resulting in an anatomical variation known as a deviated septum. It may be present at birth, result from an injury or trauma to the nose, or naturally occur as part of the aging process.

More than just a structural issue, a deviated septum can cause nasal obstruction and restrict airflow. In some cases, this can increase the risk of sinus infections and other complications.

What Are the Common Symptoms of a Deviated Septum?

Symptoms of a deviated septum vary significantly per patient, but common signs to look out for may include:

  • Persistent nasal congestion
  • Breathing difficulties in one or both nostrils
  • Postnasal drip
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Facial pain and pressure
  • Snoring or sleep disturbances

If your symptoms persist or worsen, seek professional medical help for an ENT evaluation.

How Is a Deviated Septum Diagnosed?

Here at New Braunfels Breathe Free, our ENT team can diagnose a deviated septum using diagnostic tools such as imaging and nasal endoscopy. Part of our process includes examining the patient’s nasal anatomy and airflow to aid in diagnosis. Our diagnostic process may include:

  • In-office nasal evaluation using minimally invasive tools
  • An assessment of the patient’s overall sinus function
  • A review of the patient’s symptoms and their severity, and medical history

How Is a Deviated Septum Treated?

Treatment for a deviated septum will vary depending on your care provider’s assessment of your nasal anatomy and symptom severity. Treatment may include non-surgical and surgical options.

Non-surgical deviated septum treatment: Medications

While medications do not correct a deviated septum, they may help manage related symptoms such as congestion or inflammation.

  • Decongestants
  • Antihistamines
  • Saline nasal sprays
  • Nasal corticosteroid sprays

Surgical deviated septum treatment: Septoplasty

In some cases, standard medications don’t improve symptoms. In such cases, your care provider may recommend a minimally invasive procedure called septoplasty.

Septoplasty is designed to address the underlying anatomical deviation contributing to nasal obstruction, but the degree of correction and symptom improvement can vary per individual. In some patients, septoplasty has been shown to improve nasal airflow. However, outcomes vary and are not guaranteed. A consultation with your ENT care provider can determine if this procedure is appropriate for your condition.

Here’s what to keep in mind regarding septoplasty:

  • It’s typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local or general anesthesia.
  • The procedure takes approximately 30 to 90 minutes.
  • Only internal incisions are made, so visible scarring is less likely.
  • Temporary side effects may include swelling, congestion, or mild discomfort in the treatment area.
  • Most patients can return to normal activities within a few days after the procedure.
