Managing Sinus Infections in New Braunfels, TX

Sinus Infection Treatment in New Braunfels, TX

Managing Sinus Infections in New Braunfels, TX

Sinusitis—the irritation, swelling, and inflammation of the tissues lining the sinus passages—is a common condition that affects more than 30 million people in the United States each year. Chronic sinus infections and other sinus issues can be frustrating and, for many individuals, can interfere with daily productivity, sleep, and comfort.

Here at New Braunfels Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Centers, we offer comprehensive sinus evaluations and develop personalized treatment plans based on each patient’s symptoms, clinical findings, personal health goals, and overall health profile.

What Causes Sinus Infections?

The sinuses are hollow, air-filled spaces located behind the eyes, cheeks, and forehead. These sinuses naturally produce mucus to humidify and filter the air we breathe in. Sometimes, these hollow spaces become irritated, swollen, and inflamed, resulting in a condition called sinusitis.

Sinusitis can occur due to several factors, but common contributors include:

  • Allergies
  • Structural issues, such as nasal polyps or a deviated septum
  • Viral infections, such as the common cold or flu
  • Bacterial infections

In some cases, untreated sinus infections may contribute to persistent breathing difficulties and discomfort. An ENT evaluation is crucial to identify what causes the infection and guide you toward management strategies.

What Are the Common Symptoms of Sinusitis?

Sinusitis symptoms vary per patient, but common signs may include:

  • Persistent nasal congestion
  • Runny nose with thick yellow or green nasal discharge
  • Facial pain or pressure, particularly around the nose, eyes, cheeks, and forehead
  • Postnasal drip, or mucus dripping down the back of the throat
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches
  • Low-grade fever
  • Fatigue and poor sleep quality
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth

Not all symptoms are the same for each patient. It’s important to consult with your healthcare provider to determine a diagnosis and create treatment plans to manage your symptoms.

How Is Sinusitis Treated?

Treatment for sinusitis depends on the underlying cause, the severity of the symptoms, and other patient-specific factors. Treatment options may include:

Medications

Some mild cases of sinusitis may achieve temporary relief from standard medications:

  • Decongestants
  • Nasal saline rinses
  • Nasal and systemic corticosteroids
  • Mucolytics

These medications may offer symptom relief for some patients, particularly in mild cases of sinusitis. However, they may not be sufficient for more persistent or chronic cases. Always consult with your care provider for proper medical guidance.

Balloon Sinuplasty

If standard medications don’t work to improve your symptoms, your ENT care provider might recommend balloon sinuplasty, if they determine it’s the appropriate treatment after careful evaluation of your nasal anatomy and symptoms.

Balloon sinuplasty, also known as balloon sinus dilation, is an FDA-cleared, minimally invasive procedure that may be appropriate in some cases of chronic sinusitis. During the procedure, your doctor inserts a small balloon catheter into the affected sinus cavity. Then, the balloon is gently inflated, with the intent to open blocked sinus passages. The procedure is designed to mechanically open sinus passages; however, improvement in mucus flow or symptom relief varies and is not guaranteed.

However, effectiveness and symptom relief vary based on individual health factors. A consultation with your doctor can help determine if this is the appropriate treatment for your condition.

Potential benefits of balloon sinuplasty include:

  • It’s an in-office procedure typically performed under local anesthesia.
  • It is considered minimally invasive and typically does not involve bone or tissue removal; however, all procedures carry risks that should be discussed during your consultation.
  • While recovery experiences vary, some patients may resume light activity within a few days. Recovery time depends on individual health factors.

Not all chronic sinusitis patients are ideal patients for balloon sinuplasty. An ENT consultation and evaluation can help determine if this is the appropriate treatment for you. Individual results vary, and outcomes are not guaranteed.
