Nosebleeds

Understanding the Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment in New Braunfels, TX

Nosebleeds are a common occurrence, particularly in children under 10 years old or adults over 50. Although they can be surprising or even frightening, nosebleeds are rarely serious and more often just a nuisance.

If you’re experiencing frequent or chronic nosebleeds, our team here at New Braunfels Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Centers is deeply committed to working with patients to identify contributing factors and evaluate appropriate management options. Individual responses to treatment vary.

What Causes Nosebleeds?

Nosebleeds (official medical term: epistaxis) occur when the tissues lining the inside of the nose become dry and irritated. As a result, the blood vessels break, causing a nosebleed.

The nose is prone to bleeding due to the large number of blood vessels close to the surface, especially in the cartilage of the nasal septum. When these blood vessels burst, blood may trickle from the nose.

They’re more common during the colder, winter months, due to the cold and dry air, which may increase the risk of nasal dryness and irritation. Other contributing factors may include:

  • Allergies
  • Sinus infections
  • The common cold
  • Frequent sneezing
  • Nose picking
  • Blowing the nose too hard
  • Overuse of nasal sprays
  • Foreign objects in the nose
  • Trauma or injury to the nose

Aspirin can exacerbate the condition. Additionally, a hereditary disorder called hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia is characterized by malformed blood vessels that break easily.

Frequent or chronic nosebleeds may be associated with underlying conditions such as high blood pressure or other vascular diseases. In rare cases, it could signal a serious medical condition like a tumor. A consultation with your healthcare provider can help determine what’s causing your nose to bleed frequently.

What Are the Symptoms of Nosebleeds?

Most cases of nosebleeds originate in the front of the nose and are known as anterior nosebleeds. These are easy to control and rarely indicate a serious problem. On the other hand, posterior nosebleeds, which originate from an artery in the back of the nose, are more serious and will require immediate medical attention. These are most common in the elderly.

How Are Nosebleeds Treated?

Here’s how you can address a nosebleed:

  1. Sit down and slightly lean forward while pinching your nostrils together with your thumb and index finger.
  2. Hold this position for at least five minutes, or until the bleeding stops.
  3. Refrain from blowing your nose afterward.
  4. If the bleeding has not stopped after 20 minutes or if the bleeding results from an injury to the face or nasal area, seek immediate medical attention.
  5. A healthcare professional can cauterize the blood vessels or insert packing into the nasal cavities to stop the bleeding.

If you experience frequent or chronic nosebleeds, consider these strategies:

  1. Use a nasal saline spray to keep the nasal lining moist.
  2. Run a humidifier if the air is too dry.
  3. If you smoke, quit. Smoking can increase dryness and irritation in the nasal passages.
